From the very first of my history teaching I have worked with my students in training them to read and enjoy library hooks. Each year I have felt an increasing need of a list which would place before me books that I could use and recommend to my classes as an aid to a clearer conception of the people and customs of the periods studied. I wholly agree with what Henry Lanier, the Editor of Golden Book, has said — "I'm quite sure I got a more vivid sense of the people of the Middle Ages from "The Cloister and the Hearth* than from all the medieval history I ever read - or from anything else, except Henry Adams's 'Mt. St. Michel and Chartres'; if the people and the country of India are at all comprehended by us Westerners, it is surely due mainly to 'Kim' and to Kipling's other lightning- flashes in dark places."
The urge to gain more knowledge of helpful books that would give my pupils this "vivid sense of the people" in the history that they were studying, made me search for as many books as were available in the libraries to which I had access. The following list which was begun in a small way for my own use grew to such proportions that I knew it would be of help to others and would meet a great need.
In this outline no book is used more than once although many could be used for several periods. Some books are listed to enable the child to get the atmosphere of a certain country. For example, stories of India give an excellent idea of the kind of life people are really living in this country over which England and France have fought so long.
In compiling this list a librarian, who was very much interested in seeing the successful outcome of my project and who knew the help it would be to librarians, placed at my disposal eight or ten books at a time from lists of titles which I supplied. In this way I was able to use the time which ordinarily would be spent in looking up books at the library for a more thorough perusal of the stories. Another way in which she was of help to me was in telling me which books were out of print, discarded, well edited or of especial inter- est to children, I greatly appreciated this assistance as I had found many lists of titles containing "dead wood". One list taken from a Senior High Modern History, in use to-day, contained nearly 50$ of books that this librarian found to be such "back numbers" that they were on the high shelves and covered with dust.
There are, doubtless, books on my list which some teachers can introduce very successfully while others would find them utterly impossible. My list, however, is large enough to offer a wide choice. Some periods in history have only a meagre offering while others are plentifully supplied, hence the reason for including some books that are not of great literary value.
As the list began to assume quite large proportions, I began to wonder if what I was endeavoring to do had ever been tried before. The first list of historical fiction I found was in the Historical Outlook for December, 1926, entitled "Historical Fiction and the Junior High School, with a selected Bibliography" by Albert J. Silverman.

This list, although very good in some points, has no annotations except that the books are grouped under the following headings:
1. Discovery and Colonization
2. Dispossession and Revolution
3. Government and Growth
k. Destruction and Reconstruction 5. The New Era
Although the title of Silverman's list would indicate nothing of
the sort I discovered that most of the books were to be used with
United States history with the exception of a few like "A Tale of Two
Cities" which he places in a miscellaneous group* My experience as a
Junior High teacher made me sure that his list would be very inadequate.

I found other lists such as those of Baker , of Kaye and that of Nield • Each of which meets some need, but not that of the immature, developing child who is in our Secondary schools. When my list was close to completion I discovered that Hannah Logasa, a Chicago libra- rian, had published a list of historical fiction in which she had been able to interest the students who come into the library* Her list is longer than mine and contains more books for Senior High School, but on the other hand the annotations are not as complete. I have also placed on my list readable non-fiction which I had often wanted to use, but did not know where to find.
